Is it any wonder that we feel rubbish?

Just take a couple of seconds to stop and think about what we are really made of.

Is it possible that we consist of anything but what we eat and drink and absorb from your surrounding environment? I don’t think so and if you agree with me then it is highly likely that you take great care as to what you consume in your diet.

From the minute we are conceived in our mothers womb we are being fed nutrients from our mothers blood via the umbilical cord. Scientific evidence has shown that certain vitamins and minerals are essential to our cell development from a very early age, which is why nutritional supplements such as Folic Acid are highly recommended for women during and even before conception occurs. Right from the very beginning, as our cells begin to divide and multiply, the energy that we need to grow and sustain life is being provided through our diet. This is why pregnant women are advised to eat a sensible, healthy, nutritious and balanced diet and to curtail on certain drugs and stimulants such as alcohol, cigarettes and even the amount of caffeine that is consumed.

Once we are born we are still very much dependent on our mothers for our nutrition. Not to state the obvious but this is why women have breasts. A mothers milk contains all the nutritional goodness that a new born baby needs in order to grow and develop. Even as little as a 50-100 years ago, there were no baby formulas or jars of baby food and strangely we seem to have done alright up until then. It’s a very strange thing that something as natural and healthy as breastfeeding has become rather taboo in our modern day society. This to me is just another example of how the world seems to have gone a little bit mad.

I feel very lucky that I was raised on a relatively low sugar, low fat, high fibre, whole grain diet as a child and whilst I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I am now eternally grateful to my parents for giving me the best possible start in life. Sure, during my later teenage years, as I began to take control of my own diet, I started to abused my body. I ate lots of takeaway and fast foods that were high in fat and sugar and relatively low in nutritional content. I was loving it, until I started to get fat and started to feel more and more lethargic. Because I didn’t know what I was doing to my body I would eat more high sugar and high fat foods, as these, in the short term at least, made me feel good and gave me energy.

It was in my mid to late 20’s that I really started to become aware of the type of habitual eating and drinking patterns that were causing me problems. You may relate to this type of life style, you’re working hard and need to relax in the evening so you drink a couple of beers or a glass or two of wine. You wake up the next day feeling tired, so you hit the coffee, maybe with lots of sugar to give you that kick you need, you don’t eat breakfast because you’re too busy and by 10am you’re crashing so you get another coffee and maybe a sugary snack to go with it. You’re starving by lunch time so you load up and pack it in like it’s going out of fashion and then start to feel tired again by 3-4pm. By the time you get home in the evening, you decide to have a quick pick me up in the form of more alcohol and maybe some crisps or other snacks and by the time you realise what the time is you can’t be bothered to cook, so you either stick a pizza in the oven or something else from the freezer or order a cheeky take away. Now repeat this behaviour every day and throw in a little (or maybe even a lot) of excess during the weekend. Is it any wonder that by Monday morning, you really, REALLY need that coffee to get you going again. Ringing any bells here?

If you keep that kind of lifestyle up you’ll be fat, sick and nearly dead by the time you hit 50. You will have dramatically increased your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer and may well be suffering from other pains and ailments which cannot be explained or cured by your doctor. You will likely take the pills they give you anyway, as nothing else works. Good luck with that.

Your body is amazing and for the last 3.5 billion years life on earth has evolved into what you are today. It did it on its own, without supermarkets, chemists, fad diets and convenience food and it survived. You are the living proof of that. Today with all of our combined knowledge and wisdom why is it that our health is poorer now than it ever has been. Sure people are living longer, but cancer will now affect 1 out of every 2 of us; dementia rates are climbing higher and higher every year; obesity is fast becoming the biggest threat to our health and more worryingly, childhood obesity is at a record high.

It seems really obvious when you stop and think about it. Our mass decline in health started about the same time that farming and agriculture become big business or agribusiness in the 1950’s. At about the same time the chemical industry started producing pesticides and fertilisers. The agribusiness industry started to use them and replaced the natural ways that the land had been tended previously. Low and behold, soon after, people started to get sick. Rachel Carson was one of the first people to highlight the effects of these poisonous toxins in her 1962 book Silent Spring.

Rather than look at the cause of these illnesses we began to pledge vast sums of money to create institutions to try and cure their effects. Billions of pounds have been spent on cancer research over the last 40 years, yet more people die of cancer each year now than they have done in previous years. And even though we are told that success rates are getting higher, there is still no cure for cancer.

Did you know that the chemotherapy drugs that are prescribed to treat cancer are in themselves carcinogenic? Doesn’t this seem like madness? If your house was on fire you wouldn’t start another fire in an attempt to extinguish the first one, would you?

So far I have been lucky and have not suffered from cancer, but if I was to be diagnosed with it there is no way on earth that I would allow them to dose me up with these carcinogens. My belief is that if my body gets ill it is because something is out of balance and that by restoring that balance I can help my body to heal itself.

To give you another example, we get heart disease because our arteries get clogged up with fat and cholesterol. If you don’t eat foods that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol then there will be nothing to clog up your arteries. Yet we would rather take drugs to combat the effects of these foods rather than want to change our diet and take better care of ourselves in the first place. Is it me, or has the entire world gone mad?

The food industry does not have your health and well-being at the top of their list of priorities. There top priority is to make as much profit as possible. To do this they need to extract the maximum amount of value from the minimum amount of nutrition in everything that they produce. It’s simple capitalist economics.

The answer is simple. If you want to maximise your own health and well-being and lower your risk of becoming ill then don’t buy or consume any foods that you see advertised. All processed food are significantly lower in nutritional value than fresh produce and by significant I am talking in the region of more than 50% less by the time you eat it. When I first learnt this I was absolutely shocked.
